The search for the perfect LED monitor

This is pretty simple.  I’ve been watching 22-24″ 1080p LCD monitor pricing for the past year.  I decided way back when (when you could occasionally find deals for these monitors for close to $200) that I would buy two or three to replace my current two monitors when the price dropped to $200 apiece.  What [...]

New computer or wicked fast hard drive (SSD)?

This past week, I upgraded my desktop to a quadcore CPU in my desktop and just bought an SSD for my laptop. Now my slower laptop actually feels faster much of the time.

Android outsells iPhone by 33% in Q1

6 months ago when I traded my iPhone for a Droid, I told people that this was the beginning of Android taking over the smartphone world.  I don’t think one Android phone will ever outsell the iPhone, but I don’t see how the entire Android world won’t dominate with Google’s power and so many manufacturers [...]

Best CPU value analysis so far

This Tech Report review analyzes current CPUs from cheap to expensive to determine overall value.  They also considered overall system value when doing the calculation, my like my own CPU electricity value analysis.  I think they used more expensive components across-the-board than is quite realistic to consider (raising the value of performance), but they reached [...]

Creativity is Dead. Netcraft confirms it.

What is genius?  In my breadth of study and research, all I’ve done is learn what other people do.  I understand many things, perhaps better than most, but does that go so far as to make me a genius?  I don’t feel like a genius in any way… I’m just a guy who is insatiably [...]

Two photo slideshows on one PC

Today I did some research on how to run two separate full-screen slideshows on separate monitors on a PC/Mac.  It’s aimed at setting up a kiosk that displays pictures constantly on two screens.  I’m passing that research on to you. ProPresenter is $400 Mac-only software designed to handle all displays and media for the big [...]

BenQ netbook with SSD and HD just announced

My wish has been granted.  The first laptop that has both an SSD and hard disk has been announced.  No price yet, but it will probably be in the $400 range.  Now we just need to see this idea translate to larger, more powerful laptops, and we’re good to go. http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/benqs-joybook-lite-u103-packs-an-ssd-for-when-youre-feeling-fr/

Google Navigation version 1 real life review

Since getting my Motorola Droid a month ago, I’ve put about 3000 miles on my car with the Droid acting as my GPS. Before that, I used a Magellan GPS and Google Maps on an iPhone for guidance.

Google Navigation basically puts the features of both devices into one and throws some extras in there as well. But in other ways, it’s not nearly as good. Here’s the breakdown

24/7 CPU usage cost

10w of electricity used 24/7 year round costs you $10 per year. This article takes that into consideration when comparing recent Quadcore CPUs, such as the Core i5, Core 2 Quad, Phenom II, and Athlon II
(Spoiler: The most expensive and fastest CPU isn’t the most expensive when considering power savings over 3 years)
